A Fresh Start in the Castle — Character Rebalance
Hey adventurers,
I have been watching you die. A lot. Mostly on floor 1. Mostly to Giant Spiders.
That's on me, not on you — and today I'm doing something about it.
Over the past weeks I've been digging into the numbers behind Wizard's Castle: Shadows of Zot, and what I found was honest if a little uncomfortable: the game was ending before it had a chance to begin. Average run duration was just over a minute. Almost nobody was making it to floor 2. Arcanists were sometimes entering the dungeon with 4 HP. Giant Spiders were killing people who never had a fair chance to fight back.
So I went back to the drawing board on the core systems — attributes, combat, armour, spells, the lot. What came out the other side is a much more coherent and fair game that still has real teeth. You will still die in the castle. But you will die having had a chance.
What changed, in plain terms:
- Everyone starts with more HP. Fighters and Paladins open at 12 plus a die roll plus your CON. Arcanists open at 10 plus a die roll plus CON. Nobody enters the dungeon with fewer than 8 HP. Ever.
- Armour makes sense now. The old system had an inverted formula that made plate armour easier to hit than no armour at all. That is fixed. Better armour now genuinely means harder to hit.
- Dodge is a real system. Your DEX now contests the monster's attack directly. Win that contest and you get a chance to dodge entirely. Lose it and the hit lands. High DEX characters fight differently to heavily armoured ones — both are valid.
- Spells can miss, and can backfire. Magic is powerful but no longer guaranteed. A fumbled spell can clip the caster. Slot management now has real weight.
- Giant Spiders are gone from floor 1. Floor 1 is now Goblins, Kobolds, Giant Rats, and Bandits — monsters you can actually learn on. The Spider waits for you on floor 2.
- Your character grows with you. Every level up now adds +1 to your primary stat automatically — Fighters get stronger, Arcanists get deadlier, Clerics heal better. No decisions needed, just progress.
What this means for your existing characters:
Your current characters were built on the old system. Their stats, their HP, their armour values — none of it maps cleanly to how the game works now. I could try to migrate them automatically but honestly the cleanest thing, and the fairest to you, is a fresh start.
I am not deleting your characters for you. That decision is yours. But I would strongly encourage you to head to your character management page, say a respectful farewell, and roll someone new. You will feel the difference from the first room.
Your run history, your lore discoveries, your Hall of Fame scores — those are untouched. Only the characters themselves need a reset.
One more thing:
If you have been playing since the early days and hammering the castle repeatedly — thank you. Genuinely. Every run, every death, every Spider kill in the log helped me understand what was broken. You were testing this game before I had the data to see it clearly. That matters.
The castle is still brutal. It is still meant to be. But now it is brutal in ways that are fair.
See you on floor 2.
